“That ship up there is scanning this area for non terrestrial technology… and nothing says non terrestrial like a sonic screwdriver!”

The Eleventh Doctor - Matt Smith

Screen-used prop from Doctor Who Series Ten, Episode 1, “The Pilot”.

The Eleventh Doctor's Sonic Screwdriver

Concept Artist Dan Walker returned once again to design the new sonic screwdriver and after these designs were approved, the task fell to Welsh prop maker Nicholas Robatto to make and assemble the props for the Fifth Series of the revived show.

This new design was made to replace the Ninth/Tenth Doctor prop after it was destroyed during an encounter with Prisoner Zero and the Atraxi in “The Eleventh Hour”. Later in that same episode when the TARDIS rebuilt itself, it provided the newly regenerated Eleventh Doctor, who was played by Matt Smith, with this new Sonic Screwdriver. It was once again born from the concept of the sonic being an extension of the TARDIS, and therefore shared similarities with the console room. Being constructed from copper and aluminum, like the majority of the console room, with elements like a black leather handle grip to match the leather wrapped surround of the console panels and the green swirled sections to match the green lit interior of the time rotor and control panels.

Like a large majority of the props used during production it was

after the departure of Matt Smith at the end of the Series Seven, the decision was made not to replace the prop with a new design immediately, this was in a similar fashion to previous Doctor’s sharing designs, and so the Eleventh Doctor's sonic props continued on with Peter Capaldi as the Twelfth Doctor. It remained The Doctor's constant aide until it was damaged beyond repair during a battle between the Twelfth Doctor, Davros and the Daleks in "The Magician's Apprentice/The Witch's Familiar.”

This particular prop was originally built alongside the first four Eleventh Doctor Sonic Screwdriver props by Nicholas Robatto but was retained for personal use. It went on to be used as the basis for the Rubbertoe Replicas original Eleventh Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver release and was ultimately hired out for for filming of the Series Ten episode, “The Pilot”.
