The Thirteenth Doctor - Jodie Whittaker
Archival replica made by Rubbertoe Replicas.
Due to losing everything in her pockets following her regeneration and fall to earth from the TARDIS in "Twice Upon A Time", the Thirteenth Doctor lost her previous incarnation's sonic screwdriver (and sonic sunglasses). As a result, The Doctor chose to build one of her own using 21st century Earth components in a workshop in Sheffield in "The Woman Who Fell to Earth".
This Sonic was far simpler in appearance than the previous screwdriver with a simple steel body made from melted spoons, and a crystal on the tip that glowed amber while in use, taken from a Stenza transport chamber.
Comparing it to a Swiss Army knife, but without the knife, The Doctor explained that it functioned not only as a screwdriver, but as a scanner and a tin opener, and it could be used for diagnostics.
This sonic screwdriver would later be inherited by The Fourteenth Doctor, who would make use of it during the 1966 Dalek invasion of Earth.
The Thirteenth Doctor's organic, steel and crystalline sonic screwdriver was designed by Series Eleven concept artist Darren Fereday and production designer Arwel Wyn Jones and would mimic the look of The Doctor's newly re-designed TARDIS interior set. Nick Robatto of Rubbertoe Props would once again be called upon to build the physical props just as he had previously done for the Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Doctor's sonic screwdrivers.
Realizing this unique look and feel of the iconic prop would be challenging from the get-go as the decision was made to utilize cast pewter with an aged, pitted finish as opposed to cast and painted resin. The first Eleventh Doctor sonic screwdriver prop Nick Robatto constructed took about two weeks to make, and was comprised of over fifty different components from various materials. There were many different processes involved, including intricate hand sculpting, turning, shaping, hot metal casting, 3D printing, art-working, resin casting and electronics. After the first sonic was made, Nick then went on to make an additional four filming props for Series Eleven.
With such a complex build, it is not surprising that not only were the initial five prop sonic screwdrivers repeatedly returned to Robatto's workshop for repairs and refreshes, but additional props were also ultimately created and put into service during for filming on Series Twelve, Thirteen, and the Specials. At least seven hero props were ultimately created for filming during Jodie Whittaker's tenure as The Doctor and it is possible that number could ultimately be higher.
